Role Responsibility

Do you want to improve the water environment, support climate adaptation and help make housing growth more sustainable? KCC has an opportunity to join our Flood and Water Management Team to lead our portfolio of water management projects.

The water environment faces unprecedented challenges from housing growth, climate change and pollution, these are especially acute in the southeast. Kent County Council is committed to managing these impacts and delivering the best possible outcomes for residents, businesses, and the environment in Kent.

KCC acts as the catchment coordinator for nutrient neutrality in the county, which is holding up the delivery of over 30,000 new homes. We work with local planning authorities, Natural England, NGOs and others to deliver nutrient mitigation in the county to support homing delivery. We also work with local partners to improve water efficiency and help the county adapt to the impacts of climate change on the water environment.

You will also be responsible for developing our vision for a sustainable, climate adapted water environment in Kent and help implement that vision. You will work closely with our partners and build and improve our relationships across this sector. Your work will impact on the development of key plans and strategies across the county to ensure that opportunities to manage water effectively are realised.

About You

You will be working with a broad range of partners across many fields and drawing on a number of disciplines, so there is no typical or ideal background for this post. You might be a water management professional, be working in the environment sector, or a be town planner.

You will need good networking and collaborative skills and be good at forming and maintaining relationships with both internal colleagues and external partners. You will be a strategic thinker, which you will use to develop a nutrient mitigation strategy, working with consultants and partners to prioritise projects for grant funding. You will apply your project management skills to a range of projects to ensure they are delivered on time and budget and achieve their objectives. You will work with partners, consultants and stakeholders to shape our vision for the water environment, ensuring that the county is addressing the right priorities, and influence in the right places to deliver these priorities. You will be curious and able to pick up new topics quickly, which you will be capable of communicating clearly to a non-technical audience.

This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position. The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English/Welsh sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements. The appropriate standards are set out in the Job Description/Person Specification.
