Role Responsibility

Kent County Council Highways and Transportation are looking for two Street Lighting Technician roles within the street lighting team.

Street Lighting is a highly visible and vital part of Kent’s highway network. Lighting is provided to enable the safe use of the highway for road users and pedestrians and the role of Street Lighting Technicians is key to ensuring reported faults and emergencies are dealt with promptly and efficiently. The street lighting team receives approximately 10,000 enquiries per year all of which need to be managed in a timely and professional manner.

The Technician role is a KR7 grade full time role and is based in KCC’s Ashford Henwood depot although staff may work from home when not required in the office.

The post holder will need to be confident in dealing with members of the public, Parish and District Councils, Local and County Councillors and will need to use their initiative in deciding when to keep customers informed of the progress of their enquiry. The role also requires the constant and comprehensive update of the customer service module, the works ordering module and the inventory module of our Works and Asset Management system.

Our streetlights are controlled by a central management system which is an important tool for detecting faults with lights as soon as they occur and requires daily monitoring. The post holder will be trained in interrogating the system to identify the street lighting faults and diagnose possible causes prior to instructing our street lighting contractor to attend site. The system is also used to measure energy consumption therefore the post holder will be required to ensure asset information contained in the CMS is accurate.

The role of Street Lighting Technician not only supports the Maintenance Team Leader, but also the Planned Works Team Leader and street lighting engineers. The role requires a close working relationship with our key partners Bouygues E&S UK Limited and UK Power Networks. The role is a key part of the process for applying for utility maps to assist with the planned replacement of assets.

We would like to hear from people who have a sound knowledge of all Microsoft office applications and have a high level of computer literacy. You should also have good interpersonal and organisational skills and have a strong customer focus.

It is essential that you can prioritise and organise your own workload as well as being able to work well within a team environment, work to tight deadlines, be methodical in your approach and operate with minimum supervision, as the team operates in a highly reactive work environment.

This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position. The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English/Welsh sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements. The appropriate standards are set out in the Job Description/Person Specification. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate that they have the right to work in the UK.

Interviews to be held; First two weeks in January 2023
