Role Responsibility

We will consider applications for full time and part time or term time only roles. For part time roles, the salary will be pro-rated accordingly (To be discussed at interview).

Our Public Transport department provides a huge range of transport services for people across the county. We support the local public transport network, coordinate concessionary fares schemes and provide bespoke transport services through contracts with local transport providers.

To join us as a Passenger Transport Inspector, you need to be passionate about supporting the people of Kent and aware of the Council’s role in passenger transport. You should also have the confidence to talk to all kinds of people in a professional way, even in challenging situations. Finally, you need to be organised and self-motivated, as you’ll be operating in a busy environment. Whether you’re working on-site or from home, you’ll have the freedom to manage your workload your way.

Your role in our Public Transport team

We have vacancies for full time and also part time Inspectors so, if you’re looking for a part-time role that fits around your other commitments, you’ll work around four hours per day, usually in the mornings when pupils are travelling to school or we can offer the same hours on a term time only basis. It’s a great way to achieve a more flexible working life, while helping us provide the best possible transport services for our county’s young people.  Full time Inspectors may occasionally be required to undertake inspections at evenings and weekends.

Our team organises transport for over 12,000 clients and manages around 3,000 individual contracted services. On top of that, over 25,000 young people use our concessionary fares scheme. As a Passenger Transport Inspector, you’ll see that these services work as they should, spotting issues, raising concerns and looking for areas for improvement. Whether visiting schools, observing bus services or a range of similar tasks, you’ll be part of a monitoring programme, producing daily reports and making sure that services comply with contracts. Day to day, you’ll check that services reflect timetables and that all staff and vehicles meet requirements. Working independently, you’ll be trusted to deliver without supervision.

Good Inspectors are IT literate, with great interpersonal skills. They can prepare written reports, meet deadlines and communicate clearly with all sorts of people every day. If that sounds like you, just bring us level 2/3 qualifications (NVQs/GCSEs or equivalent) and experience in customer service or a regulatory environment. This role is subject to holding a Full UK Driving Licence – The Council is committed to making reasonable adjustments so whilst this job requires the jobholder to drive your application will still be considered if you are unable to drive due to a disability.
