Legal Officer - Trading Standards

Role Responsibility

Kent County Council Trading Standards is a busy, high profile law enforcement service, whose mission is “Working with businesses and developing partnerships to drive Kent’s economic growth and protect residents”.

We are offering an exciting part-time opportunity for a motivated criminal lawyer to join our dynamic in-house legal team, engaged in a significant and diverse workload covering areas such as fraud, money laundering, trademarks, animal health and product safety. 

You will work closely with other lawyers and Trading Standards Officers, preparing cases for court at all levels and presenting them where rights of audience allow. You will also be expected to provide legal advice, guidance and support to Officers and the Management Team.

The successful applicant will:

  • Be a qualified solicitor, barrister, or legal executive
  • Have an in-depth knowledge of the Criminal and Civil Procedure Rules and the ability to interpret legislation, conduct legal research and draft documentation
  • Have recent knowledge of criminal and regulatory law in Trading Standards or another public protection service, and local government law.
  • Have the ability to evaluate evidence, prepare cases and advocate effectively on behalf of Trading Standards before the court
  • Have the ability to independently manage your own caseload with meticulous attention to detail
  • Have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with officers and lawyers to provide timely advice across the service
  • Have excellent time management and organisation skills
  • Have proficiency in administration and using Microsoft packages.
  • Have the ability to work both as part of a team and alone on your own initiative
  • Have a willingness to learn and adapt to this busy team’s way.

This part time position could provide an excellent opportunity for lawyers who are returning to work or are seeking a change in career. We offer flexible, hybrid working as this role can be carried out remotely, with some office-based working as required to support business needs.
