Volunteer Trainee Ranger
Role Responsibility
Two positions available - North and West Kent Ranger team
1 x based at Shorne Woods Country Park
1 x based at Trosley Country Park
Fixed Term until 31st March 2026, Minimum 3 days per week, with flexibility
Position One will be based at Trosley Country Park, split between working with the West Kent Ranger Team and the Medway Valley Countryside Partnership. Involving assisting with the planning and delivery of practical management techniques across a range of habitats including chalk grassland and coppice and ancient woodland. This post will also involve assisting with the delivery of environmental education events and health and wellbeing programmes alongside MVCP.
Position Two will be based at Shorne Woods Country Park primarily with the North Kent Ranger Team managing Shorne Woods and Manor Park Country Parks including assisting with the planning and delivery of practical management techniques across a range of habitats including coppice and ancient woodland as well as acid grassland. This post will also assist with the biodiversity enhancement project, aiming to protect veteran trees and to enhance the habitat for dormice by connecting the coppice woodlands to other areas of the park through planting hazel and woodland understorey corridors and copses throughout the park.
With both positions, you will be involved in many practical aspects of management including coppicing, tree planting, wood processing, fencing, livestock management and access works.
You should demonstrate knowledge and experience in countryside management or a desire to forge a career in the conservation industry.
You will be reliable and possess good interpersonal skills and have a positive attitude towards customer care. Your health should be appropriate to the needs of the role.
Whilst this is a voluntary position, the post comes with a travel and training budget allowing the successful candidate to gain valuable skills and experience in the industry.
This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position. The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English/Welsh sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements.
