Support Officer to an Opposition Group Leader

Role Responsibility

Kent County Council is seeking a highly organised, professional and politically aware Support Officer to an Opposition Group Leader. This is a unique opportunity to work at the heart of local government, providing high-level support to an Opposition Group Leader and contributing to effective democratic processes.

You will provide a co‑ordinated, efficient and confidential support service to an Opposition Group Leader, enabling them to carry out their responsibilities effectively. You will act as a key point of contact, manage competing priorities, and ensure the smooth flow of information between elected Members, officers and external stakeholders.

Working in a fast-paced and high-profile environment, you’ll need to demonstrate integrity, discretion and an ability to operate in apolitically neutral manner at all times.

You will bring proven experience of providing senior-level executive support, alongside excellent research, organisational and communication skills. You will be confident handling sensitive information, comfortable working to tight deadlines, and able to balance multiple priorities effectively.

You will work as part of the Opposition Support team where each team member supports one of the Opposition Group Leaders. The current vacancy is to support the Leader of the Restore Britain Kent Group; there may be the opportunity or requirement to work for different Group Leaders as part of your career development.

This post is politically restricted. The successful candidate must work in a politically neutral manner and will be restricted from undertaking any kind of political activity.

This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position. The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English/Welsh sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements. The appropriate standards are set out in the Job Description/Person Specification.

A short written task is to be carried out and submitted prior to the interview and will form part of the selection process.
