Structures Engineer

Role Responsibility

Kent County Council Highways Transportation and Waste are looking to expand their Structures Team by recruiting a motivated Structures Engineer looking to develop and expand their technical skills and expertise. This is an exciting time to join the team and play a major part in shaping its future. The Structure Engineer will work in Structures Operations Team.

The Structures Team are part of the Highways Asset Management business unit, which is responsible for approving, inspecting, repairing and maintaining KCC highways. The aim of the Team is to keep KCC highways safe and provide the best highway service to Kent’s residents, visitors and businesses, whilst co-ordinating activities on the highway to minimise disruption to road users and facilitate utility services, whilst ensuring the sustainability and cost effectiveness of any proposals.

The Structures Engineer role is a KR9 grade, full time role and flexible working requests will be considered. The role will be based in KCC’s Ashford Henwood depot although KCC is fully committed to hybrid working and we encourage home working when it meets our business needs.

The post holder will provide technical advice, project management of schemes, along with associated financial control and administrative tasks, and reporting to Structures Operation Team Leader.

  • Undertake civil/structural engineering roles for the Team Leader, this may include approving designs for new structures or geotechnical assets, planning and implementing the inspection and assessment programme for existing assets or delivering our capital and revenue works schemes.
  • Conduct site visits and construction audits to ensure assets are being constructed in accordance with agreed and approved designs.
  • Preparation of risk assessments and method statements. Ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation, e.g. CDM 2015.
  • Assist with budget planning and reporting in areas of responsibility within the team.
  • Preparation of briefs to consultants and other service providers with assistance to help in the fulfilment of fulfilling the duties allocated, and work with commissioned suppliers and third parties to ensure the efficient delivery of all commissioned works.
  • Assist with the project management of schemes allocated from feasibility through to completion, including programme management, contract management, budget management and undertaking lessons learnt exercise at conclusion of the scheme.
  • Ensure all project documentation and correspondence is logged and filed accurately.
  • Ensure communications, enquiries and complaints are managed sympathetically, accurately and in a timely manner in line with KCC procedures.
  • You will be required to provide assistance to other teams within the GET directorate, or any other part of KCC, from time to time as and when your skills and knowledge are required for particular projects and initiatives.

This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position. The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English/Welsh sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements.
