Senior Flood Risk Officer

Role Responsibility

There is an exciting opportunity to join the Flood and Water Management Team in Kent. The team leads KCC’s role as Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA), delivering local flood risk management in Kent, working with partners to reduce the risk of flooding and to improve the water environment and acting as a statutory consultee for surface water in planning applications.

The team delivers projects to assess local flood risk, design flood mitigation schemes and construct them to reduce the risk of flooding in the county. We are also involved in developing policy, at a local and national level, to promote sustainable water use and effective flood risk management.   

We have a vacancy for a Senior Flood Risk Project Officer to help us deliver our LLFA role. This role will support our statutory consultee duty, providing expert advice on the surface water management provisions of new developments as well drainage and flood risk advice for Local Plans, Strategic Flood Risk Assessments, Local Flood Risk Management Strategies and other strategic documents.  You will help to assess flood risk in the county, and have the opportunity to be involved with investigating incidents of flooding and the delivery of projects that help to reduce flood risk within Kent. The role will also involve the undertaking of peer reviews of others advice and providing technical support and guidance to junior members of the team.

The role requires collaborative working with County, District and Borough Council officers within planning departments, engineering and emergency resilience as well as external partners such as the Environment Agency, Water and Sewerage Companies and Internal Drainage Boards. The role will also require answering enquiries from customers, stakeholders and developers, providing general advice internally and externally and on occasion undertaking formal ‘educational’ briefings and workshops for wider stakeholders.

This post would suit someone with knowledge and experience of drainage and surface water management, particularly in a planning or an engineering context. You will need to be able to work independently and manage your own workload. The applicant must have confidence in dealing with the public and be capable of communicating complex technical matters clearly. You must be computer literate with experience of using relevant drainage software design packages, spreadsheets and databases.
