Senior Engineer

Role Responsibility

Kent County Council Structures Team are interested in hearing from Senior Civil/Structural Engineers with experience with highway structures such as bridges, culverts, retaining walls and reinforced earthworks and a desire to pass this knowledge on to others. 

The Structures Team are part of the Highways business unit, which is responsible for approving, inspecting, repairing and maintaining KCC highways. The aim of the Team is to keep KCC highways safe and provide the best highway service to Kent’s residents, visitors and businesses, whilst ensuring the sustainability and cost effectiveness of any proposals.

The Senior Engineer role is a KR10 grade , full time role although we are open to flexible working requests and will consider alternative arrangements if required, all we ask is you let us know in your application if you wish to explore this option. The role will be based in KCC’s Ashford Henwood depot, although staff are working from home when they are not required in the office. The post holder will provide technical advice and general project management of schemes, including:

  • Preparing briefs for NEC3 framework consultants and other service providers and project managing these work packages;
  • Reviewing designs for compliance with standards, legislation and stakeholder requirements;
  • Ensuring compliance with current legislation such as Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015;
  • Deputising as required for your Team Leader;
  • Identifying best practice and collaborating with others to develop KCC policies and make the most of innovative and sustainable practices;
  • Supporting junior team members to improve their technical skills to increase the intelligent client role within structures.

We are looking for a Chartered Engineer with either the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Institution of Structural Engineers; we are also open to applications from those working towards this professional qualification level if previous experience justifies this. 

In the current climate staff are working from home or in reduced occupancy and Covid assessed offices. Computers are provided to facilitate the safest environment possible whilst ensuring the continuation of the business needs.

This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position. The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English/Welsh sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements.
