Road Safety Engineering Project Manager

Role Responsibility

The KCC Transportation Department has recently been restructured and this has opened up various exciting opportunities to work within the Road Safety and Active Travel Team. We are looking for a number of organised and proactive Road Safety Engineering Project Managers (PM's) to work within the East and West Kent Highway Improvement teams. You will be representing KCC in the community and will be expected to deliver excellent customer service to the residents of Kent. The role forms part of a cross cutting team to investigate, design and deliver highway improvement schemes particularly casualty reduction measures, local transport plan (LTP) highway improvements, combined member grant schemes, parish and community led schemes and small works orders with our term contractor. 

The highway improvements team work across 3 different focal groups of interconnected work streams. These are divided into Community and Engagement, Planning and Advice and Design and Delivery. Project Managers need a firm grasp of technical highway designs and standards which are important for all 3 working groups. Individual strengths and personal skills will determine in which group candidates would be best placed. Works will be progressed through the different parts of the team utilising detailed design briefs, along with discussion with other members of the team and term contractors. 

Key aspects of the role will be to support and upskill / train highway improvement project engineers and junior members of the team and establishing a good working relationship with parish councils, KCC Members and the KCC term contractor. 

There is a requirement to present the road safety and active travel group in a positive light to the public and of course our internal customers and elected members. The role requires strong communication skills, a high level of professionalism and the ability to work closely with other team members to ensure customer response deadlines are met. 

A HNC in civil engineering or equivalent highways and transportation experience would be important for the role. 

The role(s) will be a full-time position on a 37 hours per week contract (Mon-Fri). However, for the right candidate part time hours may be acceptable in a job sharing arrangement.

Candidates would be able to utilise hybrid working with a mixture of working from home and the office. The office base would be either the Ashford or Aylesford KCC Depot which can be agreed with the successful candidate(s).

This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position. The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English/Welsh sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements.
