Role Responsibility

A new and exciting opportunity is available to be the Kent and Medway Channel Supervisor for Kent and Medway Prevent team.

Prevent is one of the four elements of the Government’s Counter Terrorism Strategy.

‘Channel’ is part of the Prevent duty established under the Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015. It is a voluntary and confidential programme which provides support to people who are vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism.

Kent County Council is delivering a new method of delivery for the Channel programme, which involves Local Authorities taking the lead on the coordination of the key activities.

It operates in Kent and Medway via the Kent and Medway Channel Panel and reports to the Prevent Duty Delivery Board. The aim of the Channel programme is to safeguard children and adults from the harm which radicalisation can cause, before they come to harm or become involved in criminal behaviour.

The role will be a member of the Kent and Medway Prevent team and is to supervise and coordinate all activity under the Channel process. This includes line managing the two Channel Coordinators and undertaking section 36 Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015 authorisations for a case to be heard at the Channel Panel.  It also involves significant partnership working with a wide range of organisations, including Counter Terrorism Police South East and Office of Security and Counter Terrorism. It will also include other tasks associated with KCC’s Prevent responsibilities.

You will hold a relevant degree or related Level 5 or above professional qualification and have extensive experience of working within a targeted support, social care, criminal justice, health, education or youth work setting. With the ability to create rapport and build relationships with children, young people and families, you will be able to gather and interpret information from a range of sources. You will have knowledge of safeguarding and child protection and relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks. You will be flexible in your approach and committed to helping to develop a new way of working. You will be prepared to work in new ways and willing to learn, working collaboratively to innovate and find new solutions, taking personal and professional responsibility for your actions and performance.

This post is subject to an Enhanced Disclosure Application to the Disclosure and Barring Service.

This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position. The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English/Welsh sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements. The appropriate standards are set out in the Job Description/Person Specification.

The successful applicant will be required to be vetted to security check (SC) level (determines that a person’s character and personal circumstances are such that they can be trusted to work in a position which may involve access to ‘Secret’ information – Ministry of Defence, National Security Vetting.)
