Kent Marmot Coastal Region Lead
Role Responsibility
Do you have excellent partnership development, health improvement, research and analytic skills and want to make a difference to the coastal communities in Kent? Kent County Council has a new and unique post within the Public Health Team. The aim is of the post is to lead the development of a public health approach to tackling health inequalities in Kent Coastal Areas – and will be linked to the work on social determinants conducted nationally by Sir Michael Marmot. We are calling this approach – the Kent Marmot Coastal Region.
Nationally, many coastal areas have suffered long-term historical decline and lack of investment, and coastal communities show some of the worst health inequalities as a result. The underlying causes of poor health and lower life expectancy often lie in social determinants of health such as education, employment, housing, transport, and the environment.
The Kent Marmot Coastal Region project aims at improving lives of people living the six coastal districts and boroughs, Swale, Canterbury, Thanet, Dover, Folkestone & Hythe, and Ashford. Health inequalities are more pronounced in these areas than elsewhere in Kent. There will also be opportunities to work with areas that are non-coastal to explore how the coastal areas are linked to regeneration and development.
This post will focus initially on two key issues, reducing worklessness and developing skills for work. As part of this post, you will be working closely with the UCL Institute of Health Equity (IHE), that is led by Sir Michael Marmot, and multiple local partners and communities to build on existing initiatives and find local solutions to these issues.
Key skills needed will be fact finding and networking, organisation skills to set up and co-ordinate a steering committee, and analysis skills to contribute to the development of recommendations and plans. Leadership and team working skills will be important as you will be working closely with the Director of Public Health and his team as well as many senior leaders and residents across Kent.
You will be an excellent partnership worker, both relationship and outcome focused, with experience of working with a range of stakeholders at all levels of seniority in organisations, and with members of the public. You will be well versed in report writing and presenting to multiple groups and boards, working towards tight deadlines. You will have significant experience at senior level and a working knowledge of public health. You will demonstrate extensive knowledge of areas in Kent. There is a significant amount of travel expected as part of this role.
If you are a passionate about improving lives in coastal Kent and enjoy working with multiple partners to find solutions to tackle the community’s needs and organisational solutions, we want to hear from you.
