Graduate Structures Engineer

Role Responsibility

Kent County Council Highways Transportation and Waste are looking to expand their Structures Development Control Team by recruiting a motivated Graduate Structures Engineer looking to develop their technical skills and expertise. This is an exciting time to join the team and play a major part in shaping its future.

The Structures Development Control Team are part of the Highways Asset Management business unit, which is responsible for approving, inspecting, repairing and maintaining KCC highways. The aim of the Team is to keep KCC highways safe and provide the best highway service to Kent’s residents, visitors and businesses, whilst co-ordinating activities on the highway to minimise disruption to road users and facilitate utility services, whilst ensuring the sustainability and cost effectiveness of any proposals.

The Graduate Structures Engineer role is a KR8 grade, full time role and flexible working requests will be considered. The role will be based in KCC’s Ashford Henwood depot. The post holder will provide technical advice and assist with general project management of schemes, including:

  • Reviewing technical submissions from scheme promoters with assistance for highway structures, geotechnical assets, road restraint systems and highway oversailing features;
    • This includes reviewing drawings, specifications, health and safety files, compliance against current standards, risk assessments, calculations and site records for example. 
  • Assist with site visits and construction audits;
  • Ensure compliance with current legislation such as Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015;
  • Assist in preparation of briefs to NEC framework consultants and other service providers.

In the current climate staff are working from home or in reduced occupancy and Covid assessed offices. Computers are provided to facilitate the safest environment possible whilst ensuring the continuation of the business needs.

This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position. The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English/Welsh sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements.
