2 Posts - Permanent Full Time

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Experienced Social Worker to work in the Service for Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children’s (SUASC) Duty Team. You will be part of a team of social workers to safeguard and support newly arrived unaccompanied asylum-seeking children from a range of countries and circumstances. You will work with the child, statutory and third sector agencies including Police, Health, the Home Office, solicitors, Refugee Council and Young Lives Foundation to identify, evaluate and review care plans to produce positive outcomes for children.

On a rota basis, you will undertake initial assessments of newly arrived unaccompanied asylum-seeking children when they first present to authorities in Kent, i.e. Dover Port, to identify immediate risks, needs and placement. You will complete all statutory requirements for the child until their case is transferred to either Kent’s Child in Care Service or another local authority. You will be supported to develop skills and experience in completing Merton case law compliant age assessments where concerns have been raised regarding the child’s claimed age.

You will be able to evidence resilience and flexibility in working with a diverse cohort of children and circumstances to deliver good outcomes. Above all, you’ll be focused on helping unaccompanied asylum-seeking children to successfully integrate into communities whilst a decision is made regarding their immigration status in the UK.

This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position. The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English/Welsh sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements. The appropriate standards are set out in the Job Description/Person Specification.

This post is subject to an Enhanced Disclosure application to the Disclosure and Barring service and registration as a qualified Social Worker with Social Work England.
