Democratic Services Officer

Role Responsibility

Democratic Services plays a vital role in administering the Council’s governance processes. The team organises and supports all formal committee meetings of the Council, ensuring they function in accordance with statutory and constitutional requirements. We provide governance advice to officers and members, as well as managing the decision-making process and school and transport appeals.

We are looking for an individual to join our team to work across all aspects of the democratic process, with specific responsibility for the organisation of public committee meetings, including the preparation of agendas and reports, supporting the smooth running of the meeting, preparing minutes, providing advice to officers and members, and maintaining the work programme.

We are looking for someone with:

  • a sound understanding of local government.
  • relevant administrative or governance experience.
  • an excellent standard of written English and competency in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams.
  • an understanding or experience of the Modern.gov agenda management system would be an advantage but not essential.
  • excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure.
  • confidence and political sensitivity in dealing with elected members and senior officers.

We operate a mix of home and office-based working, depending on the needs of the service. Equipment will be provided for home-working. You will need to be in Sessions House, Maidstone to clerk Committee meetings as and when required. There may also be occasions when you'll have to travel to external meetings.
