Archive Collections Assistant

Role Responsibility

Have you got good interpersonal skills, an interest in history, a commitment to public service, and the ability to handle fragile items safely and sensitively? The Kent Archives and Local History Service, which looks after and facilitates access to its collections of books and documents dating back to 699 A.D., has a vacancy in its front of house team at the Kent History and Library Centre in Maidstone.

The Archive Collections Assistants are responsible for producing documents and rare books from the strongrooms, as well as staffing the search room desk as the first point of contact for visitors there. Here they issue documents and receive them back, oversee the operation of the room and answer initial questions from members of the public.

Candidates for the post should be able to work with alphanumeric systems accurately, lift heavy boxes and volumes, and handle delicate items with care and sensitivity. They should be at ease in conversing with the public and answering emails about bookings.

The hours are 37 per week, worked at the Kent History and Library Centre. They include some Saturday working on a rota basis.

This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position. The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements. The appropriate standards are set out in the Job Description/Person Specification
